Storyboard Text

  • Mom, I had to take a break during swim practice because I couldn't breath.
  • Oh no! We will go to the immunologist tomorrow.
  • Yesterday I was coughing so much and couldn't get air.
  • We will run a spirometry test to be sure my diagnosis is correct.
  • Symptoms can have many causes, known as triggers. It sounds like you have exercised-induced asthma.
  • It sounds like you have a common condition called asthma.
  • When irritation occurs, usually by an allergen or exercise, the bronchioles swell more and cause difficulty when trying to get air from the trachea to the lungs. This can cause coughing or wheezing.
  • Asthma is a condition that involves the respiratory system and causes inflammation in the bronchioles.
  • It is important that asthma is controlled, especially at times when you have an infection or are sick. This could cause symptoms worsen.
  • Excess mucus in the airways because of asthma can cause even more difficulty breathing.
  • Thankfully, there are several medications that help reduce asthmatic symptoms and exacerbation.
  • The inhaler is to be used when your asthmatic symptoms occur. The inhaled steroids will decrease inflammation in the airways.
  • Each day you will take controller medicine to help with your symptoms. Next, you will carry a rescue inhaler. This is a small device containing inhaled corticosteriods.
  • Now I know how asthma affects me! I always take my medicine and carry my inhaler.
