Madame Loisel and her husband's financial situation is not very good.
Madame Loisel lives in a decent apartment and she dreams being rich.
Madame Loisel's husband gets an envelope from work, so he gives it to Madame Loisel.
She reads it and finds out it's an invitation to a party. She worries that she has nothing to wear.
Madame Loisel wants to look her very best for the party, so she goes too few places to find what she likes.
She wants to feel as rich as everyone else. (Person v. Society)
Madame refuses to put on a dirty, raggedy, shawl in front of the other rich women.
When Madame Loisel leaves the party, she realizes that she is not wearing the diamond necklace her friend lent her anymore.
After 10 years of doing labor to earn money, Madame learns that the original necklace was fake. She didn't need to use her life's savings on a new diamond necklace to replace the old one.
