One Sunday morning, whe they go to Church, a small Puritan comunity are shocked tom see their minister, Mr. Hooper, wear a black veil that cover his eyes.
Mr. Hooper wears the veil to the funeral and the wedding and the people do not know what to make of it. They are scared.
No one but his fiance Elizabeth talks to him directly about when the veil. When he refuses to it off, Elizabeth breaks the engagement. Mr. Hoooper is how performing his duty as a minister, but is completely alone, isolated.
Mr. Hooper, eventually becomes known as father Hooper, and serves until he is on his deathbed from old age. Elizabeth comes to be at his side along with Reverend Mr. Clark from Westbury. Mr. Clark tries to get Father Hooper to remove the veil before he dies, and Hooper suddenly grabs the veil and holds it tightly to his face. He shoots up in bed with the last of his energy and tells everyone that their faces hold their own black veils.
The people in the room look at each other in fright. Father Hooper falls back with a faint smile on his face.
After his dead, Mr. Hooper was buried with the veil on his face.
