  • Pythagoras was born in the eastern Aegean island of Samos, Greece in 570 BC. Contradiction also exists about his death; but there is unanimity that he was hounded and killed by his enemies in 495 B.C in Metapontum
  • Personal Life
  • As he grew up, he began to accompany his father on his trading trips. It is believed that his father once took him to Tyre, where he studied under scholars from Syria. It is possible that he might have also visited Italy during those early years
  • Why are they Famous?
  • Pythagoras studied extensively under the age of eighteen, although by then Thales (his teacher) had become too old to teach. School elicited in him an interest in science, mathematics and astronomy teachers.
  • How do we use what they are famous for today?
  • Pythagoras was married to Theano, his first student at Croton. They had a son named Telauges, and three daughters named Damo, Arignote, and Myia.
  • Pythagoras is named for the Greek mathematician and philosopher. Pythagoras founded the Pythagorean School of Mathematics in Cortona, a Greek seaport in Southern Italy.
  • The Pythagorean theorem is used today in construction and various other professions and in numerous day-to-day activities. In construction, this theorem is one of the methods builders use to lay the foundation for the corners of a building.
