  • Omniscient Narration 
  • Epic Writing Style 
  • DEFINITION: a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability; a person admired for achievements and noble qualities.  QUOTE: "In his far-off home Beowulf, Higlac's follower and the strongest of the Gaets-greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world."
  • Supernatural Elements 
  • DEFINITION: third-person narration in which the teller of the tale, who often appears to speak with the voice of the author himself, assumes an omniscient (all-knowing) perspective on the story being told QUOTE:  “Then Beowulf rose, still brave, still strong, and with his shield at his side, and a mail shirt on his breast, strode calmly, confidence, toward the tower, under the rocky cliffs: no coward could have walker there!” 
  • Vast Setting 
  • DEFINITION: long narrative poem recounting heroic deeds QUOTE: "Then they sailed,set their ship out on the waves, under the cliffs. Ready for what came they wound through the currents."  
  • Superhuman Strength 
  • DEFINITION: describes anything that pertains to or is caused by something that can't be explained by the laws of nature QUOTE: "Its breath came first . A steaming cloud pouring from the stone, then the earth itself shook." 
  • DEFINITION:  The action spans not only geographical but also often cosmological space: across land, sea, into the underworld, or thru space or time. QUOTE: "They live in secret places, windy cliffs, wolf-dens where water pours from the rocks, then runs underground, where mist steams like black clouds, and the groves of trees." 
  • DEFINITION: the power to exert force and lift weights beyond what is physically possible for a human QUOTE: "Knew at once that nowhere on earth had he met a man whose hands were harder; his mind was flooded with fear- but nothing could take his talons and himself from that tight grip."
