  • (Symbolism) Janie was forced to wear a head rag in the shop to hide her hair, because Jody was jealous of other men seeing it.  This symbolizes jealousy from Jody and that he is in control.
  • You have to wear the RAG!
  • (Biblical Allusion) in chapter 16 Mrs. Turner describes Janie as an  Angel to black folk, because she is whiter than most.
  • You are an Angel
  • (Symbolism) In "Their Eyes were Watching God" the horizon is depicted as Janie's life, future and dreams.  She can never reach her dreams, because no one can reach the horizon.
