Storyboard Text

  • The roots of ASl
  • Good morning How are you?
  • Good morning, Im good today its nice outside.
  • The beginning of learning to teach the deaf.
  • First Deaf school April 15, 1817
  • In a tiny island off the coast of Massachusetts, Martha's Vineyard. Many people here were deaf and they made up there own version of asl. Even hearing people were signing without deaf people around.
  • Inside the American School for the Deaf
  • Gallaudet saw Dr.Cogswell daughter not being able to play with the other kids and really have no language,so Gallaudet made it his job to find a way to teach the deaf. He started by going to England and asking Braidwood for help but they said no. Then he traveled to France and meet Sicard.
  • The spread of Deaf schools around America
  • NO MORE SIGNING ONLY ORAL
  • Gallaudet left France due to low funds and Clerc joined him on the boat to America. While on the boat Clerc taught Gallaudet many things fro teaching the deaf and together they opened the first school for the deaf. Alice, Dr.Cogswell daughter, was the first enrolled to the school.
  • ASl Changed back to Good ways
  • When school started everyone had their own version of al they were using. Now that everyone was in one place together, asl was being taght but it is really a combination of Martha's vineyard and gesture systems. Asl is closer to Fsl.
  • Over the Next Few years more people were graduating from the school they started their own school.Alexander Graham bell stopped schools from teaching letting them use sign and made them learn oral. This was a huge setback for the deaf because sign was their only way of talking.
  • Many years has passed and more and more people started to sign again. researcher were beginning to prove that have a language early one was helping them alot through life. Thus is how ASL was born.
