  • The pope was Gods representative and it was his duty to decide what he church would teach.
  • Dear Heavenly Father....
  • In England and France, kings inherited their thrones from their fathers. England and France held the most powerful kings.
  • Yes. All yours. You rule however you like.
  • One day, son, this will all be yours.
  • Really?
  • A group of clever popes wanted to increase their authority over bishops. They believed all religious officials should answer to the pope.
  • Emperor Henry IV wanted Pope Gregory VII removed. In response, Pope Gregory had Henry overthrown.
  • OUT!!!!!!!!
  • Since he was desperate to stay in power, Henry went to ask the pope for forgiveness. Gregory refused to see him.
  • Please, please. Have mercy! I'll do anything!!!!!
  • Henry stood outside Gregory's castle barefoot in the snow for three days straight. Eventually, Gregory accepted Henry's apology because he thought he had proven himself more powerful than the emperor, at least for that time.
  • Fine. You can come back.
  • Three Days Later...
  • Yeah Yeah
