  • Act Two, Scene 2 The same
  • That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold; What halth quenched them hath given me fire. Hark! Peace! It was the owl that shrieked, The fatal bell man, which gives the sternest goodnight. (2:2:1-5)
  • Act Two, Scene 2 Continuation
  • Infirm of purpose! Give me the daggers. The sleeping and the dead are the pictures. (2:2: 63-65)
  • I'll go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done. Look on it again I dare not.
  • Act Two, Scene 2 Continuation
  • Lady Macbeth waits anxiously in the courtyard for her husband.
  • Act Two, Scene 2 Continuation
  • What hands are here? Ha! They pluck out mine eyes! With all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood (2:2:70-71)
  • A shaken Macbeth appears and informs Lady Macbeth that he has done his deed. However, she is horrified to discover that her husband did not leave the bloody daggers at the murder scene. Macbeth refuses to return the evidence, so Lady Macbeth does the favour of returning the daggers.
  • Act Two, Scene 3 The gate at Macbeth's castle.  Enter a Porter. Knocking [is heard from] within.
  • Knock, knock, knock! Who's there, in the name of Belzebub? Here's a farmer that hanged himself on the expectation of plenty. (2:3:2-4)
  • Lady Macbeth returns the daggers, a loud knocking is heard. Lady Macbeth quickly returns the daggers and leaves to rejoin Macbeth to retire in their bed chamber.
  • Act Two, Scene 3 Continuation
  • Was it so late, friend, ere you went to bed, That you do lie so late?
  • Lady Macbeth rejoins Macbeth in their chamber, horrified to find Macbeth horrified by the bloody evidence that is remaining on his hands. Lady Macbeth reckons their both wash their hands with water.
  • The Porter's drunken sleep was cut short from interruptions of loud knocking of Macduff and Lennox. The Porter pretends to be a farmer that has committed treason and is trying to enter.  
  • The Porter opens the gate to find Macduff and Lennox.  They both question Porter if he went to sleep late and if that's the reason why he lies.
