Hi! I am a griot. I accompanied Mansa Musa on his famous hajj. On the hajjI traveled with many other people across the Sahara Desert.
On the hajj, we stopped in Egypt, my job is to record and study what happens so I spent lots of my time recording and writing down memories in my book.
On our way to Mecca we stopped in many cities. Since my job was to entertain, I would often tell stories, poems or do dances for audiences in the cities we visited.
On our pilgrimage, Mansa Musa gave out lots of gold to the people in towns we passed through. This was very generous and memorable.
One other thing Mansa Musa did was on every holy Friday on the pilgrimage, he would order a mosque built wherever he was. This was also a very notable thing he did on his Hajj.
I am just so glad I got to experience and perform the many extraordinary things Mansa Musa accomplished and encountered on his journey. I got to learn many new things on the hajj but the best part of my job as a griot was getting to spread our culture to other places through performing stories, poems and dances.
