Tom and Jerry discuss the 8th Amendment

Storyboard Text

  • November 19
  • Hey Tom! A surprise to run into you here! I just have happened to come up with another question.
  • Jerry, always a pleasure to see you. What do you need answered?
  • How does our government decide what punishes are ok to give people who break the law?
  • Well according to the 8th Amendment, there is a line between what that person specifically did to break a law and the punishment given.
  • The 8th Amendment states that "no cruel or unusual punishments shall be put into place." This also goes with the bail. No judge can legally give someone who ran a red light a death sentence or put five million dollars to get out of the punishment.
  • Wow, who knew that? I should really look these up. Thanks for your help, Tom! See you later.
