Storyboard Text

  • In 1628 parliament tried to limit the kings power by having him sign a petition to limit the Charles I ability to tax, imprison citizens, quarter troops, and martial law. He signed this petition, but quickly after acted like it never happened.
  • Since the king refused to acknowledge the fact that he had signed this petition the Civil War started between the Cavaliers (supporters of the King), and Roundheads.(supporters of Parliament)
  • You're kidding me.
  • Oliver Cromwell took leadership of a new model army as part of the Roundheads and was victorious against King Charles. Cromwell then beheaded the king, and abolished monarchy to set up commonwealth.
  • Cromwell eventually set up a military dictatorship , but died in 1658. After his death the army restored England's monarchy and in 1660 Charles II (Charles I's son) is put into power.
  • Eventually Charles II decides that being king is not for him, and steps down from his position on the throne. James II (Charles II's brother) then became the king in 1685. This worries parliament since he is openly Catholic.
  • A group of English nobles then encourages William of Orange (James II's son in law) to invade and take over the throne. James II fled to France after his realization of little support from England. William and Mary then accept the offer to the throne in 1689. The Bill of Rights is put into action.
