Who first discovered figure skating?
How did they use skates in the 1700's?
Jackson Haines was the first skater to include figure skating, as opposed to tracing patterns on the ice.
Almost 3,000 years ago,skates were sharpened and a carved skate from bone was strapped to the bottom of the shoe.
Early skates were just used for transportation,so they can move about more easily on waterways that were iced up. It was the most convenient way for traders and other people to go about their business in freezing weather.
The activity soon spread to to France and Germany.
The British began to develop skating as a sport in the 1840's. It was soon introduced into the US and Canada by British servicemen.
Soon figure skating became a popular sport in the Olympics.
