  • As she sleeps, barriers (skin and mucus) protect the body from any more harmful invaders. These line many of the body's entrances, trapping bacteria.
  • Some nonspecific immune cells that help to protect the body are lymphocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
  • While she is sleeping, the immune system sends out an inflammatory response. This response engulfs bacteria and releases bacteria killing chemicals. When she wakes up, she may feel warm, swollen or red. These are symptoms of this response.
  • Antibodies help identify and neutralize foreign objects like bacteria and viruses.

  • The y-shaped antibodies then neutralize the virus.
  • Mom! Mom! I feel better!
  • The girl feels better because her immune system fought off the invading microorganisms.
