Storyboard Text

  • Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi was born in Florence, Italy, around 1386
  • My father is a member of the Florentine Wool Combers Guild. This gives me the status of a son of a craftsman.
  • At 17 years old...
  • Thank you Ghiberti, but I'm afraid I must leave to pursue my own career.
  • He was a member of the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti, (helped in creating the cathedral doors).
  • You are a very good artist, young Donatello, and  you are a very talented apprentice.
  • In 1408...
  • He completed the life-sized marble sculpture, David.
  • Aha! I'm finally done. It's so realistic, but dramatic and emotional!
  • And I'll call this the technique of schiacciato, a way of carving marble to give a three-dimensional effect.
  • In 1443,
  • He was the head of a big workshop and was well known around Italy for being a talented sculptor.
  • He bridged the gap between the classical and Renaissance worlds and inspires artists after him to experiment with space, perspective, and depth.
  • Oh hello, Cosimo de Medici, what can I do for you lovely patron?
  • Donatello continued his work taking on commissions from wealthy patrons of the arts. He had a close friendship with the Medici family.
  • I want you to make another David statue, but this time, in bronze.
  • Donatello died of unknown causes on December 13, 1466, in Florence.
  • After he became very ill, his students completed his unfinished work.
