Hey George! Have you had math class today yet? We went over fractions and it really reminds me of this football field.
Yeah I did but I didn't really understand.. can you help me?
You see, the field is made of 100 yards. It is split into increments of 10 yards! So one field is the whole or 10/10!
That makes sense! So if you ran from the 10 yard line to the 20 yard line, you ran 1/10 of the field right?
Exactly! If I run from the 10 yard line to the 30 yard line, then what fraction would it be?
So if I would be running 20 yards.. and we know that 100 yards is the whole.. would it be 2/10ths of the field?
Yes, George! What if I ran from one end zone to the 50 yard line?
If you ran from the end zone to the 50 yard line.. that would be 50 yards out of 100 yards! But I can also simplify that! Because 50/100 is also one half of the field! So as a fraction it is also 1/2!
You got it! Can we simplify every fraction?
Well.. some fractions will already be in their lowest terms! You see, the fraction 3/5 would already be in it's lowest terms. The numerator and denominator cannot are not divisible by any of the same numbers!
What does it mean for something to be "divisible"?
It means that the number can be divided by a number without creating a remainder!
