  • In 1858, there was a senate race between senator Stephen Douglas (On Left, Democrat) and Abraham Lincoln (On right, Republican).
  • Douglas wants popular sovereignty to decide whether a state is free or has slaves, and Lincoln considers slavery immoral.
  • sovereignty will decide whether a state is free or has slaves! 
  • No, slavery is immoral!
  • Lincoln decides to challenge Douglas to a debate and Douglas wins 
  • I win
  • During this time, the north wanted to conquer the south and abolish slavery in all states so that the U.S would become more Constitutional.
  • U.S Constitution 
  • Abolish slavery!
  • You will NOT conquer us!
  • While the north wanted to restore the union, the confederacy wanted to become an independent nation.  A civil war was beginning to be made between people from the same country.
  • You can't leave the union!
  • We will become an independent nation from the north.
  • During the election, Lincoln's name did not appear on the ballot in southern states. He won in every northern state. However, the the more populous North outvoted the south. The Democratic votes were split three ways and Lincoln became the 10th President
