Kino looked at Coyotito as he lay in the hanging box. Juana cleaned Coyotito and sang an ancient song to him. Juana and Kino then ate breakfast and as they walked inside the house they saw a scorpion hanging on the rope, attached to the box, crawling down. Before Kino could catch the scorpion it had bit the baby. Juana sucked the poison out of the baby's arm and said that they should take him to the doctor. They went to the doctor but the doctor refused, for he was not their kind of people.
Kino and Juana went to find a pearl at the beach. Juana held Coyotito as they went on the canoe which was Kino's grandfather's. Juana layed Coyotito in a blanket and covered him with her shawl so that the hot sun would not hit his face. He was very swollen so she used seaweed and applied it to the baby's shoulder which was a good remedy. Kino had found oysters and a big pearl inside one. He howled and the swelling in the baby's shoulder was getting better.
The news of the pearl had traveled to everyone quickly. Everyone in the town knew about it and started to think about what they could do with it. The doctor soon found out about it and came to Kino's house and gave the baby ammonia and water. That night someone had come to take the pearl and they had hurt Kino. Juana was scared and said that the pearl was like a sin and that it would destroy them. Kino told her to hush and that in the morning they would sell the pearl.
Kino was going to sell his pearl and everyone was aware. Kino's neighbors thought about what they would do if they had it and how they did not want it to change Kino and make him greedy. Kino's brother told him to be careful and think about the price given, for it might be more valuable in other countries. Kino went to the pearl buyer and he told Kino that the pearl was too large and worth only a 1,000 pesos. Kino and the crowd of people behind him were very upset. Kino was especially upset because of what the buyer said.
Juana had taken the pearl in the night time and Kino saw. He chased her, struck her in the face, and kicked her on her side. A dark figure had come and Kino threw his knife and thought he lost the pearl but Juana found it on the path. They needed to escape so Juana went to get Coyotito and their house was then lit on fire. They stayed with Kino's brother Juan and they then left in the night to head north.
Kino and Juana had entered the wild now. Kino knew there were trackers waiting to find him to take his pearl. He had Juana and Coyotito hide in a cave. Kino was about to approach them as the men heard a noise that sounded like a cry which came from Coyotito. The men thought it was a coyote so the one with a rifle shot in the direction of the noise and it hit Coyotito. Kino killed all of the men but it was too late, Coyotito had died. They returned to town and Kino and Juana threw the pearl back into the ocean and it had vanished.
