David Balfour and Mr. Campbell are two of the main characters in this book, David is just 17 years old, doesn't have a mother, and just lost his father. Before he died, his father told him to go to Mr. Campbell and retrieve a note from him, and follow what he says no matter what. David remembered what his father has told him, so he goes to Mr. Campbell and retrieves the note, Mr Campbell tells him, you must go to you'r uncle, Ebenezer Balfour of Shaws.
David goes on his journey, without any courage, until he realizes that his dad was rich, and also a part of the Shaws, meaning that his uncle should have a nice place for him to stay, He knew he couldn't just inherit everything from his dad because he is only 17 years old. On his way he realized that not many people are fond of him, as he gets closer to the house, he gets more and more suspicious.
