June decides what she wants to eat, and Nian Zhen puts the ladies orders in the back for the cooks to prepare. While they wait, June tries to pull herself together, but is unable to. Chwun Hwa tries to make her feel better and asks about the very beautiful Jade necklace she is wearing. This gives June a breath of fresh air and she perks up a bit.
Oh, this! This is a necklace our mother gave to me to show me my “life's importance”. I never understood what she meant by it, but since she passed I haven't taken it off.
Yes! That would be great! That would make me feel a bit better.
Our mother gave this to you?! They have so much value to us Chinese people. Would you like me to explain what she meant by telling you that the necklace is your life’s importance?
Nian Zhen arrives with all 3 dinners. The girls look up with smiles on their faces, excited to share their first meal together. “Finally” they thought. The three women slowly eat their dinner, engaging in small conversations and then decide it is time to head home. June’s eyes are heavy, but her heart is warm.
June, Chwun Yu, and Chwun Hwa wake up the next morning and eat breakfast. Then they get on a train from Shanghai to go to the street near Kwelin where the twins were left. Chwun Yu gave June a very beautiful dress with red and white flowers on it to recognize happiness to give her hope in finding her Chinese self. It is calm outside with a few clouds in the sky with a light breeze.
Oh, wow. It looks like this town has recovered from the war. Everyone must have worked extremely hard to get it better and stronger than it was before the war happened.
Yeah, me and Chwun Hwa came here for the first time since we were left for our 16th birthday. It was heartwarming, yet nerve wracking to see where we were left, and to see how far our mother went to try and keep us with her.
June, Chwun Yu, and Chwun Hwa end the conversation and go back to the apartment.
June stays a couple more days in China, and then she heads home. June and the twins promise to stay in touch with each other, and will visit each other at least twice a year. The twins will be coming to America for their next visit, and June will get to show them what it is like in America and will learn even more about their mother, as well as meeting all of June’s relatives and friend’s.
