Romulus and Remus were born in Alba Longa. Their mother was the daughter of the former King before he was overthrown by his brother Amulius.
Threatened by Romulus and Remus, King Amulius abandoned the boys on the banks of a river in an attempt to kill them
The boys were found and adopted by a shepherd named Faustulus. They grew up attending to the sheep and were unaware of their true identity
When they could not resolve the dispute, they agreed to seek the go; approval through a contest of augury. Remus first saw 6 big birds but soon afterward, Romulus saw 12 smaller bird. They both claimed to have won divine approval. The new dispute furthered the contention between them. In the aftermath, Remus was killed either by Romulus or by one of his supporters.
