"Like A River" by Kathy Cannon Weichman is about a young boy named Leander who lives with his mother, father and brother, Nate. He decides to join up for the army, after his brothers swimming accident. Along the way, Leander Jordan faces many troubles and even looses his arm due to a gun mishap. Leander is then transferred to a hospital where he meets Paul settles and learns about his rough life, with many hardships still to come.
This is Leander Jordan who lives with his mother, father and brother Nate (from left to right). His friend, Given hangs out with Leander's family alot and so does Given's sister, Lily (Leander's crush) (from left to right). Leander lives on a farm with rolling hills and a large pond near West Virgina. Leander has always felt like his parents belittle him, as he is the smaller and weaker one out of him and Nate. Nate is always treated like a man, while Leander gets treated like a child.
Nate got into a swimming accident by falling into a pond and staying under for too long. Leander and Lilly got help, and fortunatly Nate survived. Unfortunatly, Nate could not join the army because he became sick and too tired. The rest of Leander and Nate's family (and even Lily) took care of him day and night. This made Leander feel worthless and even more forgotten than before.
We need to get HELP!
Love you! Good bye! See you soon!
To show Lily and his family that Leander was important and could do a man's work, he decided to join the army with Given. His family was very shocked. At first, his father wanted him to stay home and work on the fields, but later he understood. His mother was too sad to say goodbye to him and Nate was really confused. Lily never found out directly from Leander, as he was too worried what she would think. Leander almost didn't get to join the amry because of his small stature, but because Given stood up for him (and Given was massive), he was let on.
