Storyboard Text

  • Agaricus bisporus!
  • How was your day at school? Did you learn anything new?
  • Yes, Mom?
  • Good! My teacher, Ms Portobello, taught me that you're a mature mushroom, so you're brown and I'm 'immature' so I'm white.
  • Anything else?
  • That was a mouthful!
  • Our genus is Agaricus, family is Agaricaceae, order is Agaricales, class is Agaricomycetes, phylum is Basidiomycota, and our kingdom is Fungi!
  • Mom! Do you know where baby mushrooms come from?! Ms Portobello told us that our spores disperse and in order to grow they have to "land in warm, moist and shaded areas" (Saras, n.d.).
  • Interesting!
  • Mom, I have a question. Where is our family from?
  • We're from originally from Europe and North America, but now you can find our family all over the world!
  • A big reason is that humans grow us because we're nutrient rich, therefore we're beneficial to their diets.
  • Why are we all over the world?
  • Humans also keep us around is because we decompose compostable materials quickly and some of us produce medicine, such as penicillin.
  • We use extracellular digestion, which allows us to release enzymes outside of our cells that will break down the organism and we absorb the nutrients using our hyphae.
  • How do we decompose those materials so quickly?
  • Speaking of decomposition and digestion, what's for dinner?
  • The usual, decomposing organisms. Like that leaf!
  • Yum! My favourite!
