Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • We can't upset the balance between slave and free states!
  • Yes, I understand but we also have to be able to claim more land.
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power?
  • Congress should decide whether or not a state is free or slave when it comes into the Union.
  • Definitely. The state shouldn't be able to choose whether they're a free or slave state.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • We all want slavery to end so I'm not quite sure about the compromise.
  • I don't want slavery to continue and the compromise still allows slavery below the 36-30 line.
  • The Northern free states opposed compromise because they did not want to upset the balance of slave and free states. Some Northerners had opposed the compromise because the 36-30 line still allowed slavery below the line.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • I support the compromise because it lets there still be slavery below the 36-30 line.
  • The Northerners believe that Congress should decide whether or not states become free or slave states when the states are asking to be added to the U.S. Union.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights?
  • All states should be slave states! We need more slaves working in the cotton fields so we can make money.
  • The Northern free states had been worried that the slave states would expand West and slavery would not be abolished.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the compromise?
  • I hope that this compromise is not trying to end slavery. We need slaves to be able to prosper from agriculture and selling cotton.
  • The Southern slave states had supported the compromise because the compromise had agreed to keep slavery legal below the 36-30 line.
  • Me too! We still get to have slaves and we get to expand West as long as we keep slavery below the line.
  • Southern states had wanted Missouri, and all states, to be slave states because they profited from agriculture, such as cotton, so they needed slaves to labor in fields, to harvest cotton, and work in factories.
  • Agreed. We need to make more money from selling cotton and we need more slaves so the cotton can be harvested quicker.
  • The Southern slave states had feared that the compromise would be the first step to ending slavery and when slavery ends, they would not profit as much from agriculture because they would not have as many people working in the fields.
  • We need to be able to keep our slaves working because we won't be the ones who have to harvest the cotton, that's why we have slaves.
