The Haunting of Sunshine Girl By: Paige McKenzie Genre: Horror Project by: Hannah Hale
"My mom got a new job at one of the best hospitals in the United States..." (3).
I will not complain about this odd town. I support everything my mom does" (1).
"I thought it was in my dream. I guess dreams do come true...I heard the laughter and singing of the girl. I also heard the faint footsteps like she was dancing" (56-57).
In the beginning of the book, Sunshine and her mom (Kat) move to a new town because Kat got a high paying job at the local hospital. Sunshine just celebrated her sixteenth birthday and did not want to move and go to a new school.
"I went to the library to do some researching...Turns out there was some little girl named Anna who drowned in this house..." (166).
Sunshine is staying the first night in her house and hears something very uneasy. She hears slight footsteps running above her and giggles that sounds like a little girl having fun. She still doesn't know how to feel about moving. She tries expelling to Kat what has been happening but she doesn't believe her.
Sunshine finally gets to go to her new high school. She meets a boy, Nolan. Nolan loves photography and studying ghosts. The two become closer and best friends. Nolan comes over to Sunshine's house because she has been informing him about everything she's been hearing. They take photos to find a horrific sight, ghostly figures appear. There was one evil one and one nice one.
"We took the photos to the developing center...what we found was awful. Two ghostly figures seemed to appear. One man that was tall and looked evil and scary. The other was short with brown hair in pig tails..." (134-135).
Sunshine wanted to know more about what was going on in her house. She read that a little girl named Anna died in that house when she was only six. She was taking a bath and drowned. Sunshine decided that she wanted to talk to Anna and that she would answer. But, Sunshine still needed to know who the evil one was. It was a water demon. She found a way to terminate it and she did, by cutting her mom's wrists.
Sunshine wants to see if Anna is truly the one that she has been hearing. So, she sets up a chess game hoping that over night, Anna would come to play. Sunshine moved her piece before she went to sleep. When she woke up in the morning, a piece from the other side had been moved. They did this for multiple nights until the game was finished and they moved onto another. Sunshine and Anna had become friends.
"I woke up to see the chess piece has moved to a new spot. I was actually very surprised that this happened. I want to be her friend. Wait, her best friend" (216).
