During King Arthur's New Year's Feast, an unexpected visitor arrives.
"Sir courteous knight, If contest here you crave, You will not fail to fight."
"I am the Green Knight, and I have a challenge for the bravest warrior. Take an ax to my head, and in one year and one day, if I am able, I will return the blow."
Silence ensued, though the Knights of the Round Table were the known to be the bravest in the land.
"No, please my dear king, let me have the honor," said Sir Gawain.
"I will accept the challenge," stated King Arthur.
Gawain swung, chopping the Green Knight's head off. The Green Knight picked up his head, placed it on his body, and spoke.
"Wow! Sir Gawain is the most chivalrous among us." The attendees of the feast spoke with admiration and applause.
"Well, I will see you in one year. Come find me at the Green Chapel." The knight said this before he left.
