  • The main character, Cassia, is matched by the government to marry Xander.  On her port she sees a different match and is very surprised.  The government is presumed to be incapable of mistake and this error is to big to be forgotten.
  • I thought I was going to marry Xander!
  • You are matched with Ky.
  • Take this illegal poem!
  • The government gets to decide when each person will die.  Cassia's grandfather dies and gives Cassia a poem hidden in a locket.
  • 'Do not go gentle...
  • Grandfather is dying!
  • Cassia and Ky go hiking for their summer activity and grow close.  Ky sees Cassia reading the poem her grandfather gave her.  He offers to teach her cursive, which is highly illegal.
  • I can teach you cursive!
  • Yay! I hate the government!
  • Cassia shows up at the factory where Ky works.  She is supposed to sort all the workers into two groups.  One group will get a promotion and move to a better job, and the other group will stay and work longer, harder hours.  Ky is right in the middle; he is neither very good nor very bad.
  • Ky gets a promotion!
  • What is she doing here???
  • In the middle of the night Ky is taken away by the government to a very far and dangerous work position.  The entire neighborhood wakes up and everyone is forced to take a pill that makes you forget.
  • Don't worry, Cassia!  I won't die!
  • NO!  The police are taking you to the outer provinces!
  • You and your family are going to be relocated. You are needed to do hard labor in order to win the war.
  • Cassia gets an alert at the end of the book from the government.  It tells her that she and her entire family will be moving to another province.  Cassia will have to work in a camp for a few months without her family.
