The Chief tells the boys stories about "the laughing man" on the bus. The laughing man represents himself and events that have happened in his life.
The Chief brought along a girl he liked named Mary Hudson. She asked to play with the comanches and after some convincing she did. She didn't like to stay at first base, stole second, and ended up on third but didn't go home.
At the second game Mary did not play. Instead she was sitting in the bleachers watching the game between two nurse maids with baby carriages. This might represent that she is pregnant with the Chiefs baby.
