Gil's Furniture Bought & Sold
In the vignette ¨Laughter¨, Esperanza voices the differences in her and Nenny's laugh and Lucy and Rachel's laugh. She says the sisters' laugh sounds like shy ice cream bell giggles, but her and her sister's are 'all of a sudden and surprised like a pile of dishes breaking' (Cisneros 17). This is a simile because it uses 'like'. What Esperanza was trying to convey was that her laugh is loud and shocking, not something you'd expect. It could also mean that her laugh is sharp and and makes a clink sound.
In the vignette Gil's Furniture Bought & Sold, Esperanza and Nenny go to Gil's shop to look at all the things he sells. They find a record player, and he starts it up. As soon as music starts playing, Esperanza describes the sensation ¨like all of a sudden he let go of a million moths¨ (Cisneros 20). This is a simile because it uses the word like. I think the author was trying to convey that the music was beautiful and enlightening. It could also mean that the music sounded like moths being released.
In the vignette ¨Meme Ortiz¨, Esperanza gets a new neighbor, Juan, who goes by Meme. She describes his dog as ¨big, like a man dressed in a dog suit¨ (Cisneros 21). This means the dog is massive and probably the size of Esperanza. After that quote, the dog is also described as running in the same way as his owner. We can conclude the dog is as human-like as he could be.
