"I didn't think you were coming." "I think he was about to," I muttered sourly " (Page 9) Explanation: He's joking about his girlfriend cheating on him and calling attention to the bad situation

  • Definition: a less harsh way of phrasing something Purpose: establish mood or tone Example: "Hey, Ezra," toby whispered loudly. "Get a nicotine patch, buddy?" (Page 20) Explanation: Toby and Ezra had wanted to get out of the rally

  • Definition: giving characteristics to nonhuman things Purpose: create mental pictures for the readers Example: "A bee census?" he suggested. "Anyhow, I'm going to buy stock in honey" (Page 18) Explanation: This causes toby and Ezra to start talking to eachother
