In the middle of the story Lizabeth is starting to feel guilty about what she did to Ms. Lotties flowers. She is trying to figure out who she really is, an adult or a child. The she over hears her parents talking about how her father is out of work and he starts to cry. It makes Lizabeth lash out in the middle of the night and go and destroy ms. Lotties flowers
At the end of the story destroying the flowers was her last child like act before adulthood. After she destroyed them she saw what Ms. Lottie had them for, to have something beautiful to care for everyday. She finally saw that Ms. Lottie was not the old scary witch as all the children saw her. She was just an old lonely lady who was trying to have something to look forward to everyday by taking care of the flowers
