This is young Lizabeth and her little brother Joey. She is a curious young girl who lived during times of poverty. Their family lives in a small shack and they don't have many neighbors. The closest neighbor that they have is Mrs. Lottie who lives in a small run down shack with the beautiful marigolds planted in front of it. Her and her brother enjoy spending the days playing outside with their friends.
As Lizabeth is getting older, it is becoming harder and harder for her to choose what is wrong and childish, and what is the right, mature thing to do. She is regretting all of the bad choices that she continually makes like throwing the rocks at Mrs. Lottie while she is trying to tend to her flowers. She is having trouble becoming more mature and becoming a young woman.
Lizabeth finally lost it, after hearing her parents fighting she couldn't hold in all of her emotions any longer so she took it all out on poor old Mrs. Lottie. She destroyed the only thing that she cared about and that was her flowers. This was the exact event that changed Lizabeth and made her a woman. After this event, she was no longer a child and now did the right thing.
