ODE ON A GRECIAN URN - JOHN KEATS
In the first stanza, the narrator is observing a Grecian urn and the stories on it.
He notices an image of two young lovers under a tree. The man is playing a mesmerizing song on pipes.
This stanza shows that the couples love will last forever because they are frozen in time.
This scene shows a priest leading a heifer to be sacrificed. He wonders where they’re going and imagines the empty village.
In the final stanza, the narrator concludes that even when generations die, the urn and people in the scenes will last forever.
The theme of this poem is the timelessness historical artifacts have. Even if the creator of it is gone, the art still lasts.
