Cortez left Cuba to sail for Cozumel. He set anchor in a town near Tabasco.
Upon arrival, he found an interpretper who spoke Aztec language, Mayan and Nahuatl. She became his translator and strategic guide.
Sailed to Veracruz. When they arrived, the Aztec emperor Moctezuma began to try and bride them to leave by giving him gifts. Moctezuma had dreamed that he empire was about to be overtaken and did not want Cortez to stay.
Cortez marched inland and looked at the town. They were very unhappy with the Aztec rule. He took it upon himself to throw two tax collectors into jail after they asking for human sacrifices.
