The French Revolution began in 1789. The French Revolution was a time when the government would be turmoil, the king would be executed, and groups of revolutionaries would battle each other for power.
The Tennis Court Oath
There were 5 main causes of the French Revolution one of them was debt and Taxes. The King had borrowed heavily to maintain a lavish lifestyle. Also the government had borrowed to fight Great Britain, because they were in so much debt they raised taxes on commoners. The nobles and clergy did not have to pay.
The Storming of the Bastille
The Third Estate delegates whose views had been shaped by the Enlightenment were eager to make changes in the government. They insisted that all three states meet together and that each delegate can vote. This would give an advantage to the third estate who had as many delegates as the other two combined.
The Great Fear
Three days later: National Assembly ( 3rd esate broke away from the estates general and became the National Assembly) found themselves locked out of their meeting room, broke a door to an indoor tennis court, pledging to stay until they had drawn up a new constitution.
July 14th, 1789; a mob searching for gun powder and arms stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison. Overwhelmed the guards seized control of the building, and attackers killed the commander and several guards.
The Great fear was a wave of senseless panic through France where peasants became outlaws themselves. Armed with farm tools, broke into nobles' manors and destroyed documents that bound them to pay feudal dues or burned down the houses altogether.
