Storyboard Text

  • Same, Same, But Different
  • ''Two Children - one male, one female - to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.''
  • Receiver of Job
  • ''Jonas has not been assigned...Jonas has been selected!''
  • The Giver
  • ''You may lie.''
  • Jonas' family unit begins to take care of a 'defective' baby named Gabriel. His father hopes that he will be able to modify Gabriel's behavior throughout the course of a year.
  • Give and Take
  • ''The worst part of holding memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it. Memories need to be shared.'' The Giver
  • The 'Ceremony of Twelve' had ended with Jonas getting a job that was very honourable. He was now known as 'The Reciever of Memory'. Jonas didn't know what this job entitled. He anxiously awaited his training.
  • Realisation of Release
  • Jonas, very confused and anxious, entered a locked room to see an old man sitting on a chair. He called himself 'The Giver'. Jonas was uncertain on how to behave around The Giver as he had never been allowed to lie or ask questions so rudely before.
  • Kidnap & Retreat
  • ''Things could change Gabe. Things could be different. I don't know how, but there must be a way for things to be different. There could be colours. And grandparents. And everybody would have memories. You know about memories...Gabe, there could be love.
  • Jonas began receiving memories from The Giver. He learnt of things like colour and emotion for the first time. He wanted to share these experience with the people around him but they were oblivious to it. This made Jonas frustrated and angry.
  • The Giver showed a video to Jonas of his father 'releasing' an underweight baby. This is where Jonas learns that release actually means death and that his community was killing innocents, young and old alike.
  • ''As he continued to watch, the new child, no longer crying, moved his arms and legs in a jerking motion. Then he went limp. His head fell to the side, his eyes half open. Then he was still.''
  • Jonas learnt that Gabriel was to be released the following day, so in the shadows of the night he kidnapped Gabe and took him out of the community. For days the pair travelled on a bicycle running from searcher planes. Jonas and Gabe began to become weaker, making Jonas worry if they would survive in the dangerous wilderness.
