The church selling Indulgences?
Martin was walkin to Erfurt from his parents house, when suddenly he was struck by lightning! He cried for help from St Anne and promised to become a monk.
This is discraceful! i must put a stop to this dispicable work!

Martin found the church selling indulgences for purgetry (get out of free card), the people belived that buying these indulgences would cleanse them of their sins and send them straight to heaven once deceased. citizens would rcieve the indlgences in exchange for good works and piety. Not only that, but the church at the time was selling salvation to poor peasants to grant deceased relatives a "get to out of hell free card". Peasants were spending their whole life savings in the hope to salvage their loved ones.
Martin was furious and decided to write a 95 thesis, attaking pupals of the church, and of the sale of indulgences. The thiesis was Published thanks to a printing prees. Martin belived poeple should worship God through faith and not through efforts, Luthers writtings quickly spread through Europe as popele started to question the church and their connections to God.
Pope Leo X contacted Martin Luther, Martin Travled to the Roman catholic empire to speak wiht the Pope. when Martin arrived, Members of the catholic church labeled him as a heretic and to stop immediatley. Luther hid at Watburg Castle where he continued his writtings against the catholic church.
