Odysseus and his men reach an island. As they rowed near they see rams, goats, and a cavern "yawning above the water"(Homer956)
When the men went up to the cave, they wanted to take the food that was inside but Odysseus said no because he knew who was in the cave and wanted to see him. Due to this choice, "he caught another brace of men to make his breakfast"(Homer960).
After the cyclop ate some of Odysseus's men, Odysseus offered him "wine to wash down" his "scraps of men"(Homer961). The real reason why he offered him wine, was to get him drunk so they could escape.
Have some wine!
The Cyclops, who was greatly appreciated, asked for Odysseus's name. Odysseus lies saying that his name is "Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends, everyone calls me Nohbdy"(Homer961).
I am Nohbdy!
Once the Cyclops was drunk enough, Odysseus and his men stabbed the cyclops in the eye. They ran out of the cave and the cyclops tried calling out "Nohbdy, Nohbdy tricked me, Nohbdy's ruined me!"(Homer963). But no one thought that he actually got hurt.
The men escaped the terror of the cyclops but their leader, Odysseus makes a huge mistake. When they began to leave, he yelled out his real name to the Cyclops which causes him to pray to his father, Poseidon.
I am Odysseus!
