Cichlids were a very important species that lived in Lake Victoria. They changed as the natural ecosystem of Lake Victoria started to change while the coming of Europeans and growth of population. The growth of population wanted more fish. Cichlids nets caused fish percentage to decrease.

By 1954 the Nile Perch was introduced into the lake of Victoria. Then by 1979, cichlid still made about 80% of the fish population Nile Perch making less than 2%.
In the next 2 years, cichlids dropped 1% of the lake's fish population while the Nile Perch increased to about 80% percent. 200 Species of cichlids disappeared according to scientific studies.
