The Edward brothers (Haden & Benjamin) got a land grant to settle families in Texas. There were squatters when they got there.
The brothers demanded the squatters either show ownership for the land or give money for the land to stay on it, otherwise vacate the land. The squatters appealed to the Mexican government and who sided with the squatters.
The Edward brothers got upset. Haden went to U.S. while Benjamin organized a revolt and took over Old Stone Fort Nacogdoches. He created the Republic of Fredonia and declared independence from Mexico.
Republic of Fedonia
The Fredonian Revolt caught the Mexican government attention. The Mexican government sent Mier Y Teran to assess Texas. When Mier Y Teran came back and shared his findings to the government, they created the Law of April 6, 1830 to tighten it's control over Texas. The Law of April 6 ended U.S. immigration to Texas, suspended emprasario grants and stated that no new slaves could be brought to Texas.
The Texans soon wanted the April 6 law revoked, improved schools, better mail service, more protection against Native Americans and a separate statehood within Mexico. Texans sent Stephen F. Austin to present their ideas.
