  • Ok!
  • For 6 months Cortés stayed in Tenochitlan until he received a message that Velazquez was coming for him. This caused him to leave and put Alvarado in charge.
  • An Unforseen Enemy
  • The Aztec were worshipping the god Huitzilopochtli by dancing at the main temple. Alvarado and his men surrounded the Aztec and attacked. The Aztec fought hard which caused the Spanish to retreat.
  • The Final Battle
  • Block all the causeways and aqueducts!
  • We have no other choice. We have to surrender.
  • Cortés defeated the army that was coming to get him and the survivors joined him. When he came back, he found his men hiding in the palace. He then went and told Moctezuma to calm down his people. The Aztec threw rocks at Moctezuma and he died. Cuitlahuac was made the new Huey Tlatoani. He attacked the Spanish as they were trying to escape. The Spanish were carrying gold so a lot of them drowned.

The Spanish were immune to it but the Aztec weren't. Almost half of the population died in 5 months. Cuitlahuac also died from smallpox so his cousin Cuauhtemoc succeeded him.
  • After recovering the Spanish came back with the people of Texcoco who had turned against the Aztec. The Aztec had no allies and half of their population died because of smallpox, so it was hard for them to fight. The Spanish blocked the causeways and aqueducts so many Aztec died of starvation. The Aztec surrendered on August 13, 1521. The Huey Tlatoani was hanged.
