When The narrator chains Fortunato to the stable he doesn't resist because he's so drunk
When the narrator starts piling the bricks to trap Fortunato. Eventually he "comes to" the narrator can tell this by the rattling of chains and a low moaning cry.
When Fortunato wakes up he realizes that this isn't a joke and eventually decides to give up. Then the narrator leaves the catacombs and all he hears is the jingles of the bells, "No mortal" messes with Fortunato's tomb for 50 years.
