  • The NecklaceBy: Guy de MaupassantIllustrated by: Harlie Smith P.1
  • I have no thing of value or worth, but I dream of the luxurious things of life. I'm become too depressed after I visit my rich friend, and my husband means nothing to me.
  • I'm having so much fun! I want to stay here for hours talking to young men! This diamond necklace really pulls my whole look together!
  • That is fine, I guess. There is a nice anteroom here. I'll be there if you need me.
  • It is gone! I've lost Madame Forestier's necklace! Loisel has searched all night but there is no sign of it. We will have to get a loan to replace it.
  • I have been working like a maid for ten long years, and I have become old.
  • I work late at the office and  pay off debt. I copy manuscripts at five sous a page. We barely get by.
  • Jeanne! You ruined my life! I returned your necklace to you and we have been paying off the debt of 36000 francs for ten years!
  • Oh Mathide, the necklace you borrowed was costume jewlery. It was worth 400 francs at the most.
