Storyboard Text

  • There's Eve from school! I wonder what's wrong?
  • Hi Jake.   Oh nothing.  It's just the captain of my netball team.  She keeps saying things like "Indian girls can't catch".  She says she's only joking -  and she is Sri Lankan - but it's making me hate going to training.
  • Hey Eve... are you ok?
  • Whoa Eve! That's so racist!  No wonder you feel bad, especially since she's the captain of your team.   Even if she's joking she needs to know that's not ok.
  • I think so too but I don't think she knows how much it hurts and I'm a bit afraid to approach her...
  • Wow.  Would you do that for me Jake? Thank you.   I think it will be ok if we talk to her together.
  • That's understandable.  I think you need someone to go with you.  I can come.  If that  doesn't work out we might have to report it to the school.
  • After the talk to Eve's netball captain...
  • Wow - that went way better than expected!  She thought I'd take it as a joke because of her ethnic heritage.  She didn't know how much it hurt.
  • Words can be very hurtful, and I don't blame you for being offended.  I'm so glad it worked out well.  But even if it didn't, you know you can  count on your friends for support.
  • See you later Jake.   Thanks for being awesome.   I feel so much better.
  • Bye Eve!  And if you get sick of netball, come and play soccer with me!
