NONSENSE! This was our land to begin with- go back to your puny little republic.
Rome wants control of more territory and trade routes, so they decide to fight Carthage.
Well, it won't be puny for long!
Rome is better! Rome deserve more trade routes and territory!
The start of the Punic wars was when a group of Italians called the Mamertines decide to attack a city in Sicily. When someone tries to stop them, the Maertimes ask Carthage to provide help, and they did, letting the Mamertines control Carthage's city. Later, they did not want to abide by Carthage's rules, so they sided with the Romans, who agreed to help them drive out the Carthaginians.
Hey, can you help us drive them out?
Rome did not know how to build warships until they analyzed a Carthaginian warship that washed ashore and built thousands of them.
Well, It doesn't really matter that we lost one midget city, we're going to win the war because clearly we have a massive navy and you don't even know how to make a boat. Haha, suckers!
We'll see about that.
Since Carthage paid people to go to war, when Carthage lost the first Punic war, they could not pay their soldiers because they had to give Rome all their riches.
After the First Punic War, Hamilcar conquered much of Spain and moved towards Rome. Hamilcar founded the city of Barcelona. After Hamilcar died, Hamilcar's son-in-law made a treaty with Rome agreeing on the Carthaginian borders in Spain.
