  • Before this, There was the MLK & SCLC movement. The SCLC was a organization which issued a document declaring civil rights, and integration are essential to a democracy, and that they should achieve this non-violently
  • There was also the 1956 state flag. This was a Georgia state flag used from 1956 to 2001, which was designed by a southern democrat, John Sammons Bell. He was a world war veteran and an attorney, and also a supporter of segregation.

  • And then in 1961, The Albany Movement was desegregation and voters rights coalition in Albany, Georgia. After that in 1963, there was the March on Washington. This was organized by civil rights leaders organized a massive rally in Washington to urge President Kennedy's civil rights bill
  • In 1960, The Sibley commission started. This was when the then governor, Ernest Vandiver Jr. was forced to close public schools or comply to desegregate schools. The Sibley commission was created to gather state residents about desegregation and report back to the governor.

  • Then it finally ended in 1964, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places. Yet in 1967, Lester Maddox a segregationist became governor. He was also known for refusing to serve black customers in his Atlanta Restaurant.
  • John Lewis, a chairman of the SNCC was at the march on Washington where he criticized President Kennedy administration for failing to protect the constitutional rights of Black Americans.
