The narrator goes to visit Rodrick Usher, his father. He had earlier received a letter from Usher suggesting the writer would meet him to help him overcome an irritation.
Usher informs him that his father is very ill as he returns. The reader notes that Usher too seems a little ill.
They go into her room to check on her and figure out she's asleep but assume she's died.
Usher agreed to have the corpse stored until the funeral, and he played 17 days inside the house.
Usher's planning the burial and being super devastated.

During a bad storm one night Usher started making sounds in the house. The writer had started reading him a tale to calm him down. When he starts reading Usher whispering he worries he might have left his sister alive.
