Debbie and Maureen had been best friends for as long as they could remember. But Maureen's new friendship with her classmate Glenna Flaiber is putting Debbie and Maureen's friendship jeopardy. The day after Debbie returns from a family vacation, the three girls go to a carnival.
Most of the rides at the carnival are two sitters so, Maureen and Glenna go to ride one of the rides and they leave Debbie behind. Debbie is upset and starts feeling left out. Debbie feels abandoned by Maureen because of her new friendship with Glenna.
Debbie, Glenna, and Maureen are riding in the back of Mrs. Flaiber's car. Glenna then asks her mom when they are leaving for their vacation.
Glenna's mom says that they are talking Maureen on their vacation and not taking Debbie. Debbie was just thinking that Maureen was staying the night at Glenna's house just to tell her bye before she leaves.
Debbie then asks Mrs. Flaiber if she can pull over and let her walk home. While she is getting out she tells Maureen to call her when she gets home. Maureen quickly notices that something is wrong and asks if she can get out with Debbie too. Debbie notices that Maureen is walking behind her and takes her to the river to explain what is wrong.
Debbie tells Maureen that "Glenna dosen't want to be her friend" and that "Glenna would be glad if I disappeared from the face of the Earth in a puff of smoke". They both knew that what she said was a little bit true. Debbie also admits that Maureen sees something in Glenna that she don't.
