Once arrived at Skaguay the 6 remaining dogs including Buck were expecting an overpass of relaxation after their long and tiering trip from Dawson. The received the opposite and soon were given to their new masters Hal, Charles, and Mercedes. Soon to be revealed as their most brutal owners Buck has encountered.
Charles being the spouse of Mercedes has a tense relationship with Hal (Mercedes Brother). Despite that in failure for the dogs to break the sled, 6 more dogs were added to the team along with 2 huskies creating a 14 dog sled team. With their own foolishness, their showing their "arrogance" than wealth and definite lack of experience.
Due to the dog's lack of REST they re slowly and slowly deteriorating. With the trios own foolishness, they overfeed the dogs thinking it will help. soon they realize they have gone 2/3 of their food left only having traveled 1/3 of the way. Dub is the 1st one to go falling to their death and Hal's revolver.
Despite the difficulty that Mercedes has the against the trip, she demands that she travels on the sled which already weighs 5 hundred pounds adding her wait would delay the trip and cripple the dogs at a faster rate. On top of that Hal and Charles quarrel their differences whenever Mercedes mind is elsewhere.
Charles had sold his revolver for some frozen horse hide that had died six months before. When the dogs ingested the meat it was as innutritious and for some dog, it regurgitated it out to their death cutting the team smaller and smaller. They were unaware of the spring weather and soon were faced with the challenge of crossing the White River.
At the mouth of the White River, the owner of the camp John Thorton said they would be fools to travel over the unstable river. Despite that Buck wouldn't get up from the command of the Charles, who then got out his whip and almost slaughtered him to neer death. John Thorton sprang to his rescue who took hold of Buck and watched the team sled their way to their fait on top of "frozen" White River.
