Storyboard Text

  • Newton's Three Laws of Motion
  • by Jack Hayes
  • Newton's First Law: An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a nonzero net force.
  • Newton's first law of motion is seen here at the store.
  • The shopping carts people use will stay at rest until someone pushes one. Then the cart will start to move and will stay in motion until someone stops it.
  • Newton's Second Law: The size and direction of a net force equals the mass times the acceleration.
  • Newton's second law can also be observed.
  • If the mass of this bottle of soda is 3 kg, and the acceleration of it when the employee picks it up is 5 m/s2, then the net force the employee is exerting on it is 15 N.
  • Newton's Third Law: For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  • The final law is Newton's Third Law. As I'm sitting in this chair, the pushing force that I'm exerting on the chair is being exerted back on me by the chair.
  • Yes! My chair also does. In fact, all objects that you exert a force on exerts a force back onto you.
